On Tuesday 30th of October, 120 people gathered at the ANU to attend a free public forum on ageing research. Six Canberra postgraduate students spoke about their research on various topics in successful ageing, including:

• The nature of volunteering in retirement

• Friendships, family and relationships as protection against decline in later life;

• Prolonging safe driving;

• Technology recognising emotions in older adults;

• Lifestyle choices and successful ageing;

• Clinical gerontology: What it is and how it can help.

Dr Clive Hamilton, from the Australia Institute, gave a fascinating keynote lecture on Baby Boomers’ Attitudes towards Retirement.

There were also two public discussion forums, were a panel took questions from the floor and engaged in a lively debate and discussion on the following topics:

• Creating an Age-Friendly Society - Expectations, Innovations, Policies & Attitude Change; and

• Research-Based Interventions & Assistive Technologies to Improve Quality of Life in Ageing.
